Home screen with personal favourites

Why I built it

The same idea as CouchCinema, only for games — and it was my very first project. I had not found a gaming app that solved the social part the way I wanted it: seeing what people play and how they rate it, without it turning into a feed.

That CouchCinema followed with the same underlying idea was no accident. It is the thing I find interesting about recommendations: they are worth as much as the person they come from.

What the app does

The Grove is your own collection: games you have played, rated or put on the wishlist. The home screen shows your personal favourites from it, and beside them what is being played a lot right now — kept separate so your own taste does not drown in the trend.

Every game has a detail view with release year, studio, genre and community ratings. Search filters by genre, platform and game mode, and several criteria can be combined at once.

The social area gathers what others are doing: finding users to follow, leaderboards and an activity feed. The profile sums up your own activity in numbers — games rated, following, average rating.

How it is built

Flutter and Dart, with IGDB as the data source. IGDB knows games across platforms and editions, which makes matching harder than it is for films: one title can exist in several versions, on several platforms and with different release dates. Someone keeping a collection still wants to see one entry, not seven.
